Book Summary

Gwen Landon—poster woman for perfect wife, mother, and suburban bliss—is found brutally bludgeoned to death behind her Floridian McMansion.

Beautiful and beloved by her community, Gwen makes an unlikely victim. But just a scratch below the surface of her perfectly curated world reveals one far more sinister. When looking back over the six months leading up to her death, the question of, “who would do this?” quickly shifts to, “who wouldn’t?”

Commercially successful food blogger and mother of three, Nora Holliday never imagined she would have the nerve, let alone time, to get involved an affair. Trapped in an unhappy marriage, she does whatever it takes to keep it all together. But when Nora runs into Gwen Landon’s husband at a hotel in Orlando, his easy kindness and warmth proves too tempting to resist. As their affair spirals dangerously out of control, it seems things can’t get more complicated—until Gwen turns up dead.

About the Book

For the last twelve years, more than half her life, Lainey Peterson has prepared to design, create, and produce quality chocolate bars. But when she discovers her chocolate internship at Switzerland’s prestigious Alpine Foods has been canceled, she vows to do whatever it takes to get to Chocolate.

Yves Claremont, a young, ambitious department chair, would sacrifice everything to rise to vice president at Alpine Foods and redeem his father’s name. Impressed with Lainey’s resume and charming determination, Yves offers her an internship in his Pet Care department, promising a recommendation for Chocolate if she does well.

Lainey is drawn to the enigmatic and passionate Yves Claremont. He cannot deny his growing attraction to her. But inter-office relationships are strictly forbidden by Alpine Foods, and a perceptive co-worker, jealous of Yves’ success, will undermine Yves and Lainey any way he can.

Excerpt

“Chocolate is more than understanding couvertures, Dutch processing, cleavage, undertones. Chocolate is extremely emotional. It carries nuances plain candy does not. You must discover which chocolate lights up your lover’s emotional center, the pleasure-seeking part of the brain.”

“How do you find out? By asking him?”

“Oh, no. Asking is for amateurs. First, I observe, learn something about him, know his tastes and dislikes. Then apply what I know to his personality. Nine times out of ten, I’m right about which is the favorite.”

Yves stepped closer, his eyes still on her, challenging her. “What would you predict is my favorite?”

Mlle Peterson met his stare. “You’re baiting me.”

“Perhaps.” Then tilted his head down and whispered. “Or perhaps I want to see how well you have been observing me.” He scrutinized her reaction.

“I’ve totally pegged you,” she said, not even hiding her confidence.

He cocked his head. “You think you know me?”

She thrust her chin upwards with confidence. “I know chocolate. And I’ve been on the streets with you for four days.”

“Then guess.” This would be entertaining.

“Well.” She stepped away from him, adopting an air of indifference. “Judging by the car you drive, your penchant for passion, and Merino wool suits, I’d guess Mandorie Noir?”

He blinked, unable to believe how accurate she was. She had been watching him.

My Thoughts…

If your favoured reading material is a compelling tale with a good sprinkling of relationships, imperfection, romance, and humour then The Swiss Mishap by Amey Zeigler is a must-read for you!

From the get-go there was so much happening in this comedic, wonderful tale of romance! The story was told from two different perspectives: those of Lainey and Yves.

I was totally smitten with both protagonists. Lainey was smart, passionate and she had an amazing zest for life. Yves was ambitious, persistent, but was sincere. I totally adored the spark between the two of them and it was beautifully written with a romantic, endearing tone. Author, Amey Zeigler had really worked wonders with all of the characters in this fabulous story and I grew very fond of most of them, although there were one or two that were less than desirable. All had brilliant parts to play and even the baddies only added a little salt to this sweet, sugary tale.

Aside from the brilliant cast of characters, another selling point of A Swiss Mishap for me was its fabulous setting of Switzerland. Although I have never been there, I have had a longing to visit for quite some time. Amey Zeigler had a magical, eloquent way of articulating the ambiance of the place, the surrounding area and the general way of life there. I was also entranced by the author’s portrayal of Lainey’s love for chocolate. It was fantastic reading how she associated it with so many fond memories and how she used chocolate as a security blanket to help her deal with the difficult times in her life.

The plot was awesome and moved along at a really comfortable pace and I loved the author’s general writing-style. There was no room for repetitiveness or boredom here! The story was funny and witty and there were many laugh-out-loud moments. I honestly can’t think of anything that dampened my enthusiasm for this fascinating tale.

I was rooting all the way through for Lainey and Yves, and Amey Zeigler rounded things off nicely which I really appreciated. It was very hard to say goodbye to them and I found myself wishing them well for the future.

I think this author is a force to be reckoned with and I am eagerly awaiting her next contribution. I recommend A Swiss Mishap without a flicker of hesitation, so don’t miss out!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Goddess Fish Promotions at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

About the Book

Malorie’s best friend is missing, but no one seems concerned about the wayward medical student’s mysterious disappearance—until another student’s partial remains wash ashore a Seattle beach…

When Malorie witnesses her best friend and roommate leave a campus bar with a mystery date driving a silver Mercedes, she suspects foul play, especially when Lani fails to return home the next day. Both women, med students in their final year at Elliott Bay University, have a lot riding on the line, but due to Lani’s wild past, no one in her family is worried. When Malorie’s fears for her roommate deepen, she turns to her Uncle Wade, a Sergeant at Seattle Homicide.

Within 48 hours after Lani goes missing, the partial remains of a brutally murdered young woman wash up on Alki Beach, and a human hand is found in a crab pot off Bainbridge Island. When one of the bodies is identified as a pregnant, fourth-year medical student, Wade believes there’s a connection with Lani’s disappearance. And, that they might be looking for a serial killer.

Malorie suspects Lani’s kidnapper is someone they know, possibly even one of their professors at the university, a prominent Seattle anesthesiologist whose wife is the president of EBU. But when Detective Blake Stephenson discovers evidence that links another suspect to the professor’s Mercedes, he and Wade must act fast to attempt a wild rescue in the middle of Puget Sound.

My Thoughts…

What an explosive and exciting read!

Audrey J. Cole writes a hugely engrossing and entertaining novel that deals with some serious issues in this gripping thriller full of hidden truths, menace, deceit, suspense and lies.

Lani and Malorie are medical students in their final year at Elliott Bay University. When Lani leaves a campus bar with a mystery date Malorie suspects foul play, especially when Lani fails to return home the next day. Malorie’s fears for her best friend deepen, so she turns to her Uncle Wade for help, a Sergeant at Seattle Homicide.

Forty-eight hours later, the partial remains of a brutally murdered young woman wash up on Alki Beach and a human hand is found in a crab pot off Bainbridge Island. When one of the bodies is identified as a pregnant, fourth-year medical student, Wade believes there’s a connection with Lani’s disappearance. Is a serial killer at large?

Audrey J. Cole delivers an unrestrained and exuberant story of drama in this toxic concoction of murder, action, evil and corruption. The characters created by the author were fascinating in themselves and the pacing was perfect for the story. With an effortlessly transitioning plot-line, the suspense just built and built as the story progressed, right up until the exciting and mesmerising conclusion. I just had to keep turning those pages and I didn’t guess the identity of the perpetrator in this fantastic thriller.

Viable Hostage is a taut, compelling and cracking story and a book that I revelled in all the way through. It brought no disappointments and everything was beautifully wrapped up in the fabulous and immensely satisfying finale. A riveting tale of menace, hostility, evil, unscrupulousness and violence, I would love to read more from this gifted story-teller and I heartily recommend this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Goddess Fish Promotions at my request. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

A Legacy of Murder (A Kate Hamilton Mystery) by Connie Berry

I am delighted to join the blog tour for A Legacy of Murder by Connie Berry today! My thanks to Lori at Great Escapes Book Tours for the chance to join and the review copy!

About A Legacy of Murder

A Legacy of Murder: A Kate Hamilton Mystery
Traditional Mystery
2nd in Series
Crooked Lane Books (October 8, 2019)
Hardcover ~336 Pages

American antique dealer Kate Hamilton’s Christmastime jaunt to a charming English village leads to an investigation of a missing ruby…and a chain of murders.

It’s Christmastime and antiques dealer Kate Hamilton is off to visit her daughter, Christine, in the quaint English village of Long Barston. Christine and her boyfriend, Tristan, work at stately-but-crumbling Finchley Hall. Touring the Elizabethan house and grounds, Kate is intrigued by the docent’s tales of the Finchley Hoard, and the strange deaths surrounding the renowned treasure trove. But next to a small lake, Kate spies the body of a young woman, killed by a garden spade.

Nearly blind Lady Barbara, who lives at Finchley with her loyal butler, Mugg, persuades Kate to take over the murdered woman’s work. Kate finds that a Burmese ruby has vanished from the legendary Blood-Red Ring, replaced by a lesser garnet. Were the theft and the woman’s death connected?

Kate learns that Lady Barbara’s son fled to Venezuela years before, suspected of murdering another young woman. The murder weapon belonged to an old gardener, who becomes the leading suspect. But is Lady Barbara’s son back to kill again? When another body is found, the clues point toward Christine. It’s up to Kate to clear her daughter’s name in Connie Berry’s second Kate Hamilton mystery, a treasure for fans of traditional British mysteries.

I Thought…

If your favoured reading material is a compelling tale with a good sprinkling of mystery, murder, relationships and good old-fashioned policing and sleuthing then A Legacy of Murder by Connie Berry is a must-read for you!

It’s nearly Christmastime and independent and level-headed American antique dealer Kate Hamilton is back, along with a very busy DI Tom Mallory, in this fabulous continuation of a brilliant series! This traditional mystery plot was very appealing to me in many ways. There were elements of history surrounding an unsolved murder, a large bunch of colourful characters, a whisper of troubled romance and a fantastic setting in the English countryside.

This was a whodunnit mystery containing many red herrings that threw me off the scent and would satisfy even the most meticulously thorough armchair detective. Connie Berry’s knowledge of antiques was admirable and she clearly knew her subject matter very well. I found that this novel was suspenseful enough to keep my level of interest high and I wanted to keep scrolling on my e-reader.

All in all, A Legacy of Murder was a brilliant addition to marvellous, compulsive series and it was the perfect book to curl up with on a chilly autumn weekend along with a steaming mug of hot chocolate! I am already looking forward to reading the next instalment.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel through Great Escapes Book Tours at my request. This review is my unbiased opinion.
