About Read and Buried

Read and Buried: A Lighthouse Library Mystery
Cozy Mystery
6th in Series
Crooked Lane Books (October 15, 2019)
Hardcover: 325 Pages
ISBN-10: 1643852337
ISBN-13: 978-1643852331
Digital ASIN: B07P9MQV3F

Librarian Lucy Richardson unearths a mysterious map dating back to the Civil War. But if she can’t crack its code, she may end up read and buried.

The Bodie Island Lighthouse Library Classic Novel Book Club is reading Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne while workers dig into the earth to repair the Lighthouse Library’s foundations. The digging halts when Lucy pulls a battered tin box containing a Civil War-era diary from the pit. Tucked inside is a hand-drawn map of the Outer Banks accompanied by a page written in an indecipherable code.

The library is overrun by people clamoring to see the artifact. Later that night, Lucy and Connor McNeil find the body of historical society member Jeremy Hughes inside the library. Clearly Jeremy was not the only one who broke into the library–the map and the coded page are missing.

Lucy’s nemesis, Louise Jane McKaughnan, confesses to entering the library after closing to sneak a peek but denies seeing Jeremy–or his killer. When Lucy discovers that fellow-librarian Charlene had a past with Jeremy, she’s forced to do what she vowed not to do–get involved in the case. Meanwhile, the entire library staff and community become obsessed with trying to decode the page. But when the library has a second break in, it becomes clear that someone is determined to solve that code.

I Thought…

As a lover of cozy mysteries, I knew I would be onto a winner with this sixth book in ‘A Lighthouse Library Mystery’ series! Read and Buried ticked all the right boxes before I had even started reading.

The setting – a library in a lighthouse, no less – and an eye-catching front cover – all the makings of a great read for me. The concept of a library in a lighthouse is incredibly alluring and the thought of living and working there even more so. This location is particularly enticing for me as I live on the coast near a lighthouse!

I have only read one of the earlier books in the series – ‘Something Read, Something Dead’ but I didn’t feel as though I had missed out as it wasn’t particularly difficult to catch up with the characters and their roles.

Best-selling author, Eva Gates has drawn a lot of fun characters in this fabulous cozy mystery. Likeable Lucy is a librarian who recently moved to the Outer banks and she had a lot going on in this book. Protagonist Lucy had the necessary attributes of any great sleuth – intelligence, curiosity and keenness.

There was an incredible number of characters in Read and Buried but I think I just about managed to keep track of all of them without being overwhelmed! Apart from Lucy herself, I wasn’t especially fond of any of the others and the victim, Jeremy Hughes, was pretty despicable, too, but it only made a fabulous story even greater.Charlie, the library cat, was, of course, an ever-present favourite.

There aren’t many settings as perfect as a library located within a lighthouse and Eva Gates made great use of this. Outer Banks, North Carolina is a fine coastal town, with a real sense of community and a general feeling of nostalgia. I could really feel its wild beauty and this, as well as a town full of secrets, made it a brilliant backdrop for a murder investigation.

Another of my favourite aspects of this novel was the fluidity of the writing. The details of the plot were very well executed and every chapter left me with a compelling need to read on.

The author did a brilliant job of balancing a few different story-lines and different events jumbled matters up somewhat, making figuring out the identity of the perpetrator more challenging. There was a sense of increasing danger as the story progressed, which definitely helped to keep my interest.

Reading Read and Buried has cemented my discovery of another  favourite author to add to my ever-growing list.

I very much look forward to returning to the Outer Banks, North Carolina with Lucy on a future occasion and reading the earlier books in the series, too! So entertaining and engaging, Read and Buried is definitely well worth the time invested.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel through Great Escapes Book Tours at my own request. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

@NoraLeDuc @GoddessFish #TrailofSecrets

I am delighted to join the review tour for Trail of Secrets by Nora LeDuc today! My thanks to Marianne & Judy at Goddess Fish Promotions for the chance to join and the wonderful review copy!

About the Book

Who killed the vivacious, Emily McGuire and laid out her body at the water tower? Orderly, rule-follower Mia McGuire is the least likely person to answer this question. Mia’s life has taken a downward spiral with her sister Emily’s murder, the breakup with her boyfriend, and losing her editing position. But when the homicide investigation crawls, Mia can’t stand by doing nothing. She hires the problematic Lucas Davis to help her find the truth.

After suffering trauma from a shooting on the job,  Lucas Davis resigns from the local force. Once known as a daredevil in his small Florida town, he has become an embarrassment to his dad, the police chief. When Mia offers him investigative work, he quickly accepts the job to prove he still possesses the skills and guts to solve the case. Together, these two unlikely sleuths form an intimate bond and are determined to beat the odds. They set out to bring a terrifying killer to justice before he targets them next.

I Thought…

If your favoured reading material is a compelling tale with a good sprinkling of mystery, duplicity, manipulation, obsession, anger, hatred, violence and murder, then feel free to read Trail of Secrets by Nora LeDuc.

Mia McGuire’s younger sister Emily has been found dead but who killed the vivacious, fun-loving young woman? Amenable, sweet, and reliable Mia is the least likely person to answer this question. Mia’s life has taken a downward spiral since Emily’s murder as she struggles to cope with the breakup with her boyfriend and losing her editing job. But with the murder investigation moving at such a slow pace, Mia feels the need to chivvy things along. She hires the problematic but charming Lucas Davis to help her find out the truth.

Lucas has resigned from the local police force after suffering from trauma resulting from a shooting. He has become an embarrassment to his police chief dad so he accepts the investigative work offered to him by Mia, to prove he still possesses the grit, skills and nerve to solve the case. Together, the two unlikely sleuths form an intimate bond and work together to try to identify the perpetrator before they become the next victims.

The novel was told from the perspective of Mia and I was drawn into this novel by Nora LeDuc’s clever writing. I was never bored but instead, was lured deeper and deeper into this really engrossing tale. The author managed to turn whatever I was thinking completely upside down as I tried to guess the murderer’s identity. The plot and the storyline were both fascinating in themselves but the sizzling romance between Mia and Lucas really made this a special read for me. I fully appreciated the skill shown by the author in creating a perfect balance between the mystery and the spiciness and tenderness of the story.

Packed with nuance and superb twisty moments, I really didn’t know where the story would end up and the solution, when it came, was terrific and hugely satisfying. Trail of Secrets is a book that is certainly well worth reading.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Goddess Fish Promotions at my own request. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

A Curio Killing (A Keepsake Cove Mystery) by Mary Ellen Hughes

I am delighted to join the blog tour for A Curio Killing by Mary Ellen Hughes today! My thanks to Lori at Great Escapes Book Tours for the chance to join and the wonderful review copy!

A Curio Killing (A Keepsake Cove Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Setting – Maryland
Midnight Ink (September 8, 2019)
Paperback: 264 pages
ISBN-10: 0738752266

About A Curio Killing

Callie finds treble in Keepsake Cove when her ex-boyfriend is framed for murder . . .

Callie Reed is looking forward to her first Keepsake Cove spring festival. But her excitement dims considerably when she learns that her ex-boyfriend, Hank, will be performing with one of the hired country-western bands. Callie vows to keep her distance, but that changes when the band’s manager, Bobby Linville, is found dead, killed with the music box Hank bought at Callie’s shop.

Hank is soon singing a sad tune in a detention center with Callie his only lifeline. Though thoroughly aware of his many faults, she knows violence and murder aren’t in his blood. But that means one of her fellow Keepsake Cove residents must be hiding a dark secret—something Callie desperately needs to uncover.

I Thought…

A great mystery which is surprisingly dark for a cozy, A Curio Killing is book three in the  ‘Keepsake Cove Mystery’ series.

Cassie Reed is going about her life making ends meet and running her shop, House of Melody, selling unusual music boxes, alongside all of the other collectables businesses in her little town, including Shake It Up! – a shop selling salt & pepper shakers. Keepsake Cove, Maryland is a wonderful, quaint little place and the townsfolk regularly hold events for business promotion. This time, it is the weekend of the Spring Festival with various entertainments on offer for the event-goers such as a band, fancy dress photography, craft stalls and line-dancing. During the festivities, a dead body is found. A previous beau of Callie’s, Hank, the hired band’s guest singer, is considered to be the main suspect but he maintains that he is not the perpetrator. Callie turns amateur-sleuth but will she able to find out the truth before she is next on the hit list?

I loved down-to-earth and inquisitive Callie although she did have a tendency towards procrastination. A few of the other characters were difficult to warm to, however, I was rather fond of kindhearted Delia. Some of the stronger secondary characters provided further depth and richness to the story – such as part-time assistant Tabitha, Callie’s significant other, Brian and her fiction writer friend, Lyssa.

I really appreciated the author, Mary Ellen Hughes’ easy-going style of writing. With its interesting dialogue and red herrings, there was never a dull moment in this thrilling cozy mystery.

There was plenty of opportunity to play armchair detective alongside Cassie whilst I tried to guess the identity of the killer. Swiping through the pages on my e-reader, I finished A Curio Killing in only a few hours!

A fantastic and engaging read which was well worth the time invested and totally deserves my five stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel through Great Escapes Book Tours at my own request. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

I am delighted to join the blog tour for Christmas Trifle by Heather Haven today! My thanks to Lori at Great Escapes Book Tours for the chance to join and the wonderful review copy!

Christmas Trifle (A  Snow Lake Romantic Suspense Mystery) by Heather Haven

About the Book

When chefs Charly and Cliff Harding divorce, she gets custody of their upscale restaurant and its namesake, Felix, the cat.  He gets custody of their dog, Oscar.  What they both still have custody of is each other’s heart. But they seem to be the only two people in the small ski resort town of Snow Lake, Nevada, that don’t know it.

When Cliff opens his own restaurant in direct competition with Charly, bad things start to happen. Death threats, accidents, and murder are now on the menu. Their ‘if-you-can’t-take-the-heat-then-get-out-of-the-kitchen’ battles are backfiring, and regrets consume the two of them. But can they find their way back to each other?  Or is it too late? Because they just might spend the rest of their lives in prison unjustly accused of killing someone. Or can love triumph over even murder?

I Thought…

This is the first book in the new ‘Snow Lake Romantic Suspense Mystery’ series by Heather Haven. Although I haven’t read any other books by this author, I had no problem getting stuck in and I was really thrilled with the story!

Even though the Christmas-time prominence was lower than anticipated, it was still a very enjoyable, sweet and lovely romantic suspense story that was right up my street! With its well drawn characters, exciting plot and wonderful setting, I was especially fond of the hardworking and solidly dependable Charly. Cliff on the other hand, was quite the enigma – seemly foolish and self-centred, though I warmed to him as the story unfolded. I loved Cliff’s sister, Julia, who seemed to have been blessed with such a good nature that she was able to get along with just about anyone!

I really appreciated some of the musical references in this tale, however, the icing on the cake was the author, Heather Haven’s superb plot-line. This novel was certainly no twee, cute romance story – not that there would have been anything amiss with that. This was also a cleverly written tale of suspense and mystery, with strange goings-on, death-threats and accidents. Christmas Trifle was so well-paced and certainly never boring. The comedic aspect to the story was also very pleasing, allowing me many laugh-out-loud moments.

A fabulous beginning to a fresh and exciting series and I can’t wait to read the next instalment. Highly recommended!

My Thoughts…

This is the sixth book in the Five-Ingredient Mystery series by Maya Corrigan. Although I hadn’t read any of the other books in this series, I had no problem getting stuck in and I was really thrilled with this book!

This Halloween themed cozy mystery was right up my street, with its well drawn characters, exciting plot and wonderful setting. I was especially fond of Val and her Grandad Don and how well they got along with one another. It was refreshing to have a male assistant amateur-sleuth in Grandad Don as most cozies tend to focus on female sleuths.

I really appreciated that the author, Maya Corrigan’s use of the Halloween theme was cleverly linked with other Halloween threads such as a haunted house and the costume contest. I loved the super, well thought-out plot which was well paced and never boring. The comedic aspect to the story was very pleasing, allowing me many laugh-out-loud moments.

Crypt Suzette was a brilliant and extremely enjoyable little mystery and it’s obviously a great series as well. Established series’ sometimes become a little stale and repetitive over time but this one still seems fresh and exciting and I can’t wait to read the previous instalments. Highly recommended!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Great Escapes Tours at my own request. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

On Fur Bridge Farm, Jules cares for rescued rabbits. But when a killer strikes, she’ll need a rabbit to rescue her . . .

Juliette “Jules” Bridge prides herself on the tender rehabilitation she provides for injured or abused rabbits on her New Hampshire rescue farm, but she has a very special relationship with one bunny in particular. Bun is a black-and-white rabbit who happens to have the ability to communicate through mental telepathy. Once she got over the shock, Jules found her furry friend had a lot to say.

One frigid March morning on their walk together, Bun spots a body. The police identify the frozen stiff as Arthur Freeman, aka Arty the Mime. Jules and Arty knew each other on the children’s party circuit, where he’d perform magic tricks and she had an educational rabbit petting pen. With Bun egging her on, Jules decides it’s time they hop to it and put their heads together to discover who silenced the mime. But their investigation leads them down a rabbit hole of more suspects and lies, while a killer sets a trap for them . . .

My Thoughts…

If you like cozy mysteries and you are looking for a series with a difference, then look no further!

I loved this cozy with its unusual telepathic rabbit. The first in a new series, Left Fur Dead was set in a quaint New Hampshire Town.

In the opening chapters we meet Juliette ‘Jules’ Bridge who owns and runs a sanctuary for rescued rabbits. Jules was well drawn and very likeable in terms of her fearlessness and determination but her decision-making was extremely flawed as she kept on finding herself in undesirable situations.

Bun, Jules’ telepathic black and white rabbit, had a penchant for sleuthing, assisting Jules to solve crimes in their community, especially if they have a connection to the rabbit farm. Bun was sweet, very wise and observant, though garrulous and stole many a scene from the others.

All of the characters created by the author, J. M. Griffin, were fascinating in themselves and I could see some opportunities for character progression. The pacing was perfect for the story and with an effortlessly transitioning plot-line, the suspense built as the story progressed, right up until the surprising conclusion. I just had to keep turning those pages and I didn’t guess the identity of the perpetrator in this fantastic mystery, although I had them on my plausible suspect list.

If you’re looking for an alternative cozy mystery read, then I heartily recommend Left Fur Dead. I will be looking out for more by this fabulous author, J. M. Griffin.

The Marijuana Murders by Mark S. Bacon | Blog Tour

@baconauthor @GoddessFish #TheMarijuanaMurders

I am delighted to join the blog tour for The Marijuana Murders by Mark S. Bacon today! My thanks to Marianne & Judy at Goddess Fish Promotions for the chance to join and the wonderful review copy!

Book Summary

Nostalgia City executive Kate Sorensen finds the body of a mechanic crushed under an automobile hoist in the theme park’s garage. Accident or murder? Will it impact Kate’s decision to become an advisor for one of two competing campaigns to legalize marijuana in Arizona?

When the death is ruled a homicide and the DEA stages a surprise raid, park cab driver Lyle Deming is recruited to help solve the murder and find out if the park’s garage is being used to smuggle drugs. The anxiety-ridden ex-cop is soon poking around a Mexican border town looking for a park contractor who might be a drug mule. Or he might be dead.

Meanwhile, Kate, a 6-2 former college basketball star, is in the middle of a heated clash between potential corporate control of pot marketing and a laid-back, grow-your-own approach. As Kate wonders whether she should mediate or advocate, she’s forced to dash for her life. Amid setbacks and threats, she and Lyle must sort through interwoven crimes, a tangle of evidence, and dark suspects.

Then there’s another murder.

The Marijuana Murders is the third novel in this mystery series set in Nostalgia City, a theme park that re-creates—in every detail—a small town from the 1970s.

I Thought…

What a mind-blowing and exciting read!

Even though The Marijuana Murders was book three in a series I found that this novel still suited my tastes as a lover of the mystery genre and it held its own as a single read. During a great, solid opening chapter, the tension built and the action really started to happen.

The setting of a 1970’s theme park was highly original, for me anyway. The characters created by the author, Mark S. Bacon, were fascinating in themselves and the pacing was perfect for the story. With an effortlessly transitioning plot-line, the suspense just built and built as the story progressed, right up until the exciting and nail-biting conclusion. I just had to keep turning those pages and I didn’t guess the identity of the perpetrators in this fantastic mystery.

This multi-layered mystery was most intriguing, especially with the inclusion of some of the interesting links, including the political and current events which complemented the setting of the theme park, Nostalgia City and the current desire to make marijuana legal for all adults.

I loved the chemistry and tenderness between the main characters, Kate Sorensen and Lyle Deming. I liked Kate’s unwavering loyalty, fearlessness and determination. For his part, theme park cab driver and ex-cop Lyle, though anxiety-ridden, was tireless in his dogged pursuit of the truth.

If you’re looking for a truly explosive read, then I heartily recommend The Marijuana Murders. I will be looking out for more by this fabulous author, Mark S. Bacon.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Goddess Fish Promotions. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

When exotic pet-sitter Belinda Blake moves into a carriage house in tony Greenwich, Connecticut, she’s hoping to find some new clients. Instead she discovers a corpse in the garden—and a knack for solving murders . . .

Pet-sitter Belinda Blake doesn’t rattle easily, but move-in day has been eventful, to say the least. The python in her care tried to slither to freedom—just as she met Stone Carrington V, her landlords’ disarmingly handsome son. With the constrictor back in its cage, she heads out to the garden, only to discover a designer shoe poking out of the boxwood hedge—attached to a woman’s dead body.

The victim, Margo Fenton, was a Carrington family friend, and no one in their circle seems above suspicion. Between client trips to Manhattan and visits to her family in upstate New York, Belinda begins to put the pieces together. But though she’s falling for Stone’s numerous charms, Belinda wonders if she’s cozying up to a killer. And soon, daily contact with a deadly reptile might be the least dangerous part of her life . . .

My Thoughts…

This was a fabulous beginning to a brand new series!

Belinda Blake, an exotic pet-sitter, has recently relocated to Greenwich, Connecticut to develop her business looking after peoples’ exotic pets in their absence. On her first day in her new rented accommodation, a carriage house located in the grounds of a mansion belonging to the Carrington family, she discovers a corpse – the body of a young woman who is still wearing one of her Louboutins. Can Belinda and the detective on the case find the killer before the murderer strikes again?

I loved this fascinating mystery! Heather Day Gilbert’s descriptions of the setting were impressive and the pacing was spot on. There was always plenty going on and there was certainly never a dull moment!

The author’s characterisation was brilliant. I loved the feisty and fearless Belinda and Stone Carrington the fifth, who was charming, suave and handsome. All of the characters had a great part to play, whether or not they were likeable and all had plenty of audacity and spirit.

The plot was brilliantly executed and I was desperate to find out what was going to happen next. The combination of description and dialogue was great and I had plenty of opportunity to play armchair detective as the story progressed, although, like Belinda, I didn’t figure out who the murderer was until the exciting reveal. The ending definitely took me by surprise.

Although not as humorous as many of the cozy mysteries I’ve read, I highly recommend “Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass”.

I am already looking forward to reading the next book in the series. A well deserved five stars!

Love, Lies and Azure Eyes by Janis Thornton

About the Book

Love, Lies, and Azure Eyes Paranormal Romantic Suspense Soul Mate Publishing, LLC (June 12, 2019) Print Length: 267 pages ASIN: B07PRV6VZC

Elated by Annie’s response, Johnny caved to his impulse and pressed his mouth to her sweet lips, sparking a surge of electricity that ricocheted through his entire body, and for one glorious moment swept him up in a wave of emotion that meteorically whisked him to the edge of the universe, past swirling spirals of brightly burning stars — white dwarfs, red giants, entire galaxies. Caught in the rapture, he shed his cocoon of darkness and experienced the light — the wonderful, warm, life-affirming light. He reveled in it, felt alive. He almost believed he was. Almost.

* * *

West Coast journalist Annie Sinclair’s career, not to mention her love life, has been on the skids far too long, when she returns to Logan Point, her small, Indiana hometown. She’s back to make amends with her elderly father, and to delve into the 25-year-old, unsolved murder of her high school classmate for a writing gig with a national tabloid.

Annie’s plans soon go awry, and her mettle is tested — first when her father warns her against digging into the past; and again, when she meets the Logan Point Ledger’s handsome, but exasperating, new editor; and again still, when she reconnects with her first love, who clearly wants to rekindle what once was.

But Annie’s most arduous test appears in the form of the earthbound spirit of a boy she once knew — the boy with the azure eyes accused of the murder she is looking into. He needs her to prove his innocence, so he can break the ties that bind him to the darkness. In exchange, he will set Annie free to realize that the love she yearns for is just within her reach … if only she will open her heart.

My Thoughts…

I loved this engrossing and fast-paced suspense novel!

Although I had reservations about reading it because of the paranormal element, I had no need to be concerned because in the end, I think this considerably enhanced the story.

The author, Janis Thornton, created some fabulous characters for this great tale. I loved that Annie was so down-to-earth, determined and feisty. Even the bad guys played a great part and they all contributed to the story in their individual ways.

I loved that Scott Wayne, Logan Point’s handsome and intrepid new editor at ‘The Ledger’ was always one step ahead of Annie, though this must have been extremely frustrating for her.

The snippets of romance in this thriller were a lovely addition and really complemented the story, overall. The mystery itself was a definite page-turner and I was desperate to find out how events would eventually be concluded. There was plenty of opportunity to play armchair detective in the novel though I didn’t guess the outcome before the big reveal.

The writing style of Janis Thornton was great for me. There was a good combination of descriptive passages to dialogue.

Love, Lies and Azure Eyes is worth each one of it’s five stars and I highly recommend it!

Community Craft proprietor Sammy Kane suspects that a tantalizing thread links the deaths of her best friend and a bestselling author. But can she weave together the clues?

Samantha “Sammy” Kane is settling into her new life in idyllic Heartsford, Wisconsin, running her late friend Kate Allen’s craft shop, Community Craft when one early June day, bestselling crochet author Jane Johnson visits Heartsford. Captivated by Community Craft, Jane devotes a chapter in her new book, Behind the Seams, to the store. Sammy is honored, though satisfaction quickly turns to shock when she finds Jane strangled to death—her cold hands clutching a copy of her most recently published book, with the words “THE END” raggedly scratched into the cover.

Heavens to Etsy! Not only must Sammy contend with the author’s inauspicious demise, she has to untie some knotty details from her own past. It turns out Kate’s death was not what it seemed, and instead somehow hooked to Jane Johnson’s demise. Handsome Detective Liam Nash is on the “skein”, more than happy to see the shop owner again, if less than enamored by her sleuthing interventions. But this was Sammy’s best friend—she has to know.

Fortunately, Sammy has a “lace” in the hole. As a child, she formed the S.H.E. detective team with her cousin, Heidi, and her sister, Ellie. Having already reconstituted their partnership, the S.H.E. team searches for a pattern behind the latest death. As the case starts to unravel, will Sammy and team be able to sidestep Liam quick enough to stitch together the clues?

My Thoughts…

I was so pleased I was given the opportunity to read this cracking cozy mystery. Initially I was lured by the wonderful premise as it had a little bit of everything on offer – a quaint setting in a quiet(?!) village, a cute craft shop, a B & B and a bakery selling delicious cakes. Perfect.

I loved the story-line. The plot was so engaging and the pacing was perfect. I was totally engrossed from the first few pages. Although this was book two in the ‘Handcrafted Mystery’ series, it wasn’t a problem as plenty of back-story was given where needed and this did not interrupt the flow of the mystery.

The writing style of Holly Quinn was great for me. There was a good combination of descriptive passages to dialogue. The characters were all very interesting with their own personalities and foibles. My favourites were the protagonist, Sammy and the handsome detective, Liam Nash, with his smouldering, chocolate-brown eyes. Sammy herself, came across as fun-loving, effervescent and very down-to-earth.

There was a good mix of general village life to mystery and I was with Sammy all the way, trying to guess the identity of the perpetrator. I remained in the dark until the very exciting and fulfilling ending.

I will be reading book one in the series – ‘A Crafter Knits a Clue’ – as soon as I get the opportunity.

If cozies are one of your genres of choice, you really must read A Crafter Hooks a Killer.
